GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Matt McCarthy stroked seven three-pointers and scored a career-high 25 points in Guilford College's 73-65 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over Emory & Henry College Wednesday night.
McCarthy drained four threes in the first half, including three during a 15-8 run that opened a 12-point Quakers' lead 4:24 before halftime. Guilford led 40-30 at the break, thanks to McCarthy and 10 Wasps' turnovers, which led to 18 Quakers' points.
McCarthy had two more three-pointers in the second half's opening minutes along with one of his career- and game-high five steals. After the theft he fed Josh Pittman for a layup and a 54-37 Guilford lead with 15:16 left in regulation. The Quakers shot just 26.7 percent from the floor in the second half, which let Emory & Henry stick around, but the Wasps hurt themselves with 15 second-half turnovers. An Armando Murrell layup brought Emory & Henry to within 66-57 with just under two minutes left, but Pittman responded with a three-pointer, effectively sealing the win.
The basket gave Pittman 12 points on an off-shooting night in which he made just five-of-14 shots from the floor, including 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. He did have three steals and dished out a game-high five assists. Will Freeman matched his season high with 15 points off the bench and also had six rebounds in 16 minutes. Rookie Zeb Richardson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Travis Tracy scored six points and collected a team-high eight rebounds. The Quakers corralled 21 offensive caroms, which led to 24 second-chance points.
