Comeback Attempt Comes Up Short as Brooklyn Falls to Hunter, 70-65

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team erased an 18-point halftime deficit, but came up short in the end, as the Bulldogs suffered a 70-65 loss against the visiting Hunter College Hawks in a CUNY Athletic Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at the West Quad Center.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, February 9th; however, the game was postponed to Sunday due to the effects of Winter Storm Nemo.

With the loss, Brooklyn snaps its five-game winning streak and falls to 10-13 overall on the season and 8-7 in the CUNYAC; while Hunter snaps its seven-game losing streak to improve to 8-16 overall on the year and 5-10 in conference play.

Prior to the start of the game, seniors Jeffrey Noel, Abdul Lanlokun, Kavon Baker and Steven Grant were all honored for the their hard work and dedication to the BC Men's Basketball program, as part of Senior Day celebrations.

Hunter controlled the first half from the tip, jumping out to 15-point advantage, 17-2, with 12:57 remaining in the opening period. The Hawks led by double digits for much of the half, and would lead by as many as 19, 33-14, with 6:16 left before intermission, as the visitors would eventually take an 18-point halftime advantage, 40-22.

Hunter used a hot shooting hand to build its halftime lead, as the Hawks shot 60.7% (17-28) from the field, including going a perfect 6-for-6 from beyond the arc. Hunter's Brian Kruger netted 12 first half points on 4-for-4 shooting from downtown.

The Hawks would continue to lead by double figures until the Bulldogs began to storm back. Trailing by 15, 57-42, with just 11:44 remaining in the ballgame, Brooklyn used a 21-4 run to take its first lead of the game, 63-61, with 4:01 left on the clock. Grant led the charge scoring eight points in the run, while Baker added six points, including surpassing 1,000 career points. Baker has scored 1,006 points during his college career, which includes one season at Kingsborough Community College (910 at BC, 96 at KCC).

The BC lead would not last for long, as Kruger would tie the game at 63 all at 3:57 hitting a pair of free throws. The Bulldogs would go back on top following a pair of free throws from Noel that made it 65-64 in favor of the home team, with 2:07 remaining in the game, but Brooklyn would never score again, as Hunter scored the final six points down the stretch to escape with a hard-fought 70-65 victory.

Noel finished with a team-high 19 points for BC, while Grant added 16 points coming off the bench. Baker filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Freshman Shayne Martinez contributed with eight points and five assists off the bench, while classmate Egzon Gjonbalaj added seven points.

For Hunter, Jerrell Antley led all scorers with 21 points, to go with eight assists, while Kruger finished the day with 16 points off the bench. Peter Koutsoloukas clogged up the paint recording a double-double with 12 points and game-high 10 rebounds.

For the game, BC shot 46.6% (27-58) from the field, but converted just 25.0% (3-12) from three. The Bulldogs also shot 61.5% (8-13) from the free throw line.

Hunter shot 47.1% (24-51) from the field, while going a perfect 7-for-7 (100%) from beyond the arc. The Hawks also made the most of their free throws, converting 83.3% (15-18).

Brooklyn will now travel to Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of The City College of New York (CCNY) for 2012-2013 regular season finale, as the Bulldogs will take on the Beavers on Tuesday, February 12th.
