FOREST GROVE – After trailing by as much as 13 points midway through the second half, Pacific stormed back to tie the game with three seconds left and then rolled through overtime to score a 68-62 come-from-behind win over Pacific Lutheran Saturday night in Northwest Conference men's basketball action at the Stoller Center.
After falling behind 44-31 with 8:18 left in the second, Pacific proceeded to outscore the Lutes 26-14 to end regulation, 14 of those coming from Danny Brakebush (Fr., Portland, Ore.). Colin Wester (Sr., Portland, Ore.) tied the game with three seconds left to send the game into overtime. Pacific outscored the Lutes 11-5 in the extra period, with Brakebush sealing the deal with a pair of free throws with nine seconds left.
Wester posted his third straight 20-plus point night, finishing with 22 points on 7 of 20 from the field and 8 of 11 from the free throw line to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Brakebush scored 19 of his 20 points in the second half and overtime, hitting on 6 of 11 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Dustin Bowser (Sr., Bellingham, Wash.) posted his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, Pacific finished the night shooting 41.1 percent from the field (23-56).
With the win, Pacific improved to 14-9 overall, their most wins since the 1999-2000 season. They also kept pace with Lewis & Clark for fourth place in the NWC at 8-6. The Boxers and Pioneers will square off on Tuesday with the potential final conference tournament spot on the line.
Cameron Schilling led Pacific Lutheran (7-16, 5-9 NWC) with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Daniel Landram came off the bench to score 14 points and made 8 of 9 from the free throw line. The Lutes shot 30.4 percent from the field (17-56), but hit 18 of 23 from the free throw line. The Lutes also outrebounded the Boxers 42-40.
Both teams came out relatively flat in a low-scoring first half. The Lutes jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 16:11 mark on a three-pointer by Schilling, but then neither team scored for the next four minutes. Wester ended the drought with his lay-in at the 11:48 mark and Coby Proctor (So., Sublimity, Ore.) tied it at 7-7 on his three-pointer with 10:55 to go.
The game was tied again at 12-12 with 6:13 to go before the Lutes closed the period on a 12-5 run. Andrew Earnest's two free throws gave the Lutes an eight-point edge with 2:37 left before Brakebush's free throw on the next possession closed scoring as the Boxers went into halftime trailing 24-17.
Pacific managed to close the lead to within one early in the second half, trailing 27-26 on a Brakebush three-pointer at the 16:18 mark. The teams traded baskets over the next minute before a lay-up by Schilling started a potentially backbreaking 14-2 run. Earnest closed the run with his jumper with 8:18 to go that gave PLU their biggest lead of 13 points, 44-31, with 8:18 to go.
While the Boxers spent much of the night ice cold, they became suddenly hot over the final eight minutes of regulation. Beatty's leaning lay-in with 3:50 left brought the Boxers back within five and Brakebush's lay-in with 2:32 to go gave Pacific their first lead of the game, 48-47. The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes, with the Lutes taking a 57-55 lead with 19 seconds left on a Schilling free throw. Pacific used as much of the clock as they could on their final possession of the half and tied the game at 57-57 on Wester's lay-up with three seconds left.
The momentum belonged completely to the Boxers in the overtime period. Wester's jumper at the 3:32 mark gave Pacific a 61-57 lead and his jumper with 56 seconds left extended that advantage to five. Landrum brought the Lutes back to within three with his short-range jumper on the next possession, but Pacific closed out the night with three free throws that built the ending six-point cushion.
Pacific will close out the 2012-13 home schedule on Tuesday, hosting Lewis & Clark in a fourth place showdown at the Stoller Center. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. Live audio and video webcasts will be available at goboxers.com. Pacific Lutheran will host the Pioneers on Friday.
