CAMDEN, N.J. – Three Pioneers were in double figures to help lead the William Paterson men's basketball team (15-9, 10-7 NJAC) to a 65-56 victory at Rutgers-Camden (9-15, 6-11 NJAC) Feb. 9.
Senior guard/forward Lance Brown (Teaneck, N.J./Paterson Catholic) had his sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Rick DeStefano (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) was 4-for-8 (.500) from three-point range en route to 16 tallies. Freshman guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) had 13 points, three assists and five steals, and freshman guard/forward Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, N.Y./Nia Prep) added eight points to his game-best 11 rebounds.
WP enjoyed a 28-21 halftime advantage, thanks in part to DeStefano's 12 points, and six times expanded that margin to double digits during the second half before a 7-0 Scarlet Raptor run cut the lead to three at 53-50 with 3:52 to play.
When Woody Redding's layup pulled Rutgers-Camden to within one at 55-54 with 2:01 on the clock, Mensah immediately answered with a three-pointer, and two Brown free throws made the score 60-54 with 1:01 remaining. Redding scored again two seconds later, but Bridgeman converted a layup (62-56, 0:44), and DeStefano knocked down three of his four attempts from the charity stripe during the next 21 seconds, all while the Raptors missed their final four shots from the field.
Yusuf Leary had 18 points to lead Rutgers-Camden. Teon Russell finished with 17 tallies and Redding posted 12 points and nine assists.
William Paterson will celebrate Senior Night Wednesday, Feb. 13, when it hosts No. 10 Ramapo at 8:00 p.m.
