ALBION – Albion College erased a 13-point first-half deficit to earn a 73-68 victory over Trine University in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action.
The first eight minutes of the contest featured 10 lead changes. Nick Tatu scored a basket and two free throws to ignite a 16-2 run for Trine. Ian Jackson, who led all players with 23 points, also scored five points during the rally. Tatu gave Albion fits in the first half, making all three of his shots to score 10 of his 15 points in the contest.
Six Britons scored in the final 5 ½ minutes of the first half as Albion whittled the deficit to 32-31 at halftime. Mike Smith scored the first basket of the second half as Albion regained the lead and neither team led by more than three for the rest of regulation.
"The credit goes to our guys because they never quit," Albion Coach Jody May said after his team improved to 2-9 in league play. "Trine got the lead because we relaxed defensively. We played good, tight defense and tried to contest shots."
Scott Rogers made the first of two free throws to tie the score at 60, but neither team scored in the final 1:49 of regulation to send the game to overtime.
Chris Hutton scored a layup on Albion's first possession of overtime and the Britons never trailed. Eric Evans buried a 3-point shot and Zach Hurth and Eric Evans tacked on two free throws apiece as Albion's lead ballooned to 73-65.
Jared Holmquist and Rogers also scored in double figures for Trine with 13 and 11, respectively.
Hutton finished with 20 points, one shy of his season-high. Evans and Leonard Wernette-Leff added 12 and 10, respectively.
