Brooklyn, NY- The Medgar Evers College Men's Basketball Cougars defeated the Hunter College Hawks 99-62 on Monday January 28, 2013 at Medgar Evers College. The win improved the Cougars to 9-11 Overall and 5-6 CUNYAC while the Hawks fell to 7-13 Overall and 4-7 CUNYAC.
This was the 2nd meeting between the 2 schools this season. The 1st was a Hawks win in OT. It was a close game. This 2nd game wasn't close at all. The Cougars led from the opening tip. Hunter cut the lead to 2pts twice but that was it. Two Medgar Evers College players hit career milestones.
In the win, Medgar Evers College was led by three players, each with 19pts. Senior Captain and Guard Jovan Deare scored 19pts and has scored more than 1,600 career points in his four year career. Jovan was 11-14 FT-FTA. Deare grabbed 9 rebounds, tallied 2 assists, a block, and 5 steals. Freshman Guard Jamel Lewis scored a career high 19pts (5-7 FG-FGA), grabbed 3 rebounds, tallied 3 assists, and 2 steals. Sophomore Guard Hector Navarro scored 19pts as well. Navarro shot 1-1 3pt. FG-FGA, and 4-5 FT-FTA. Navarro grabbed 3 rebounds, tallied 4 assists, and a steal. Junior Guard Michael Taylor scored 15pts (3-4 3pt. FG-FGA, and 2-2 FT-FTA), grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, added 2 blocks and a steal. Senior Forward Winston Douglas scored 11pts (5-7 FT-FTA), grabbed 12 rebounds, tallied 5 assists, a block, and 3 steals. Douglas recorded his 15th double double of the season.
In the loss, Hunter was led by Jerrell Antley with 11pts.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday January 30, 2013, when they travel to Brooklyn College and play the rival Bulldogs. Game time is 7:30pm and can be seen on http://ustream.tv/channel/mecathletics.
