Sharp-shooting Statesmen beat Engineers 89-71

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball shot 55.4 percent from the floor on its way to an 89-71 Liberty League victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Statesmen also dominated the glass, owning a 49-39 rebounding advantage.

Five Hobart players hit double digits in the scoring column, led by forward Richie Bonney. The junior owned the paint, making 10-of-13 shots from the floor on his way to a game-high 23 points. He also corralled a game-high 10 rebounds for his ninth career double-double. Junior guard Joe Gibbons added 20 points, senior guard Stefan Thompson netted 14 points, and sophomore guard Connor Rehbaum and senior guard Rezin Davis finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore guard Trey Blanding handed out a game-high seven assists.

Rensselaer (9-9, 4-5 LL) shot just 32.4 percent from the floor, making 10-of-33 3-point attempts. Jaimie Zajac led the Engineers with 21 points, including six 3s. Brendan Farley contributed 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The first half was a track meet with five lead changes and seven ties. RPI's Cedric White made a jumper with 4:46 remaining to tie the game at 29-all. At that point, Hobart (12-6, 8-1) seized control of the game with an 11-1 run. Bonney kick-started the surge with a traditional 3-point play. Farley scored the final two baskets of the half to cut the Engineers' deficit to 40-34 at halftime.

Early in the second half, the Statesmen stretched their lead to as many as 13, but a 10-4 run by the visitors made it a seven-point game with 10:55 remaining. Hobart responded to the threat by outscoring RPI 17-5 over the next six minutes. The decisive run was punctuated by Bonney's one-handed slam at the 6:38 mark.

The Statesmen, who have won four in a row, will host Skidmore College (14-6, 8-3) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Engineers will travel to RIT (6-13, 2-8) to play at the same date and time.
