POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 29, 2013) – It has been almost
seven years since the Vassar College men's basketball team has
scored more than 70 points against the always-tough Bard College
defense. The Brewers did just that in the 74-68 victory over the
Raptors Tuesday evening in the Athletics and Fitness Center,
snapping the three-game win streak that Bard started last
season.
Sophomore guard Andrew
Adkins stepped up clutch, hitting some serious
artillery shots and going 3-3 from beyond the 3-point arc. He added
another five from the field for a career-high 20 points. Freshman
forward Nick
Johnson set a high mark for his career-high scoring
with 15 points, hitting 5-6 from 3-point land.
Sophomore Alex
Snyder proved the area under the basket was his
domain, making 6-8 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line
for 19 points. Sophomore guardErikson
Wasyl added ten points to the equation.
The win puts the Brewers ahead of the Raptors in the Liberty
League standings with a League record of 2-7 (6-12 overall) while
Bard falls to 1-10 (4-14 overall). Vassar will next host Clarkson
University in League action on Friday at 8:00 pm. Bard will next
host St. Lawrence University on Friday at 8:00 pm.
"We're so proud on how our guys kept their composure out on the
floor tonight," head coach Del
Harris said. "We stayed together for a great finish
and we got the win that was a must."
Bard responded hard with 3:26 remaining in the second half after
Adkins got his 19th point with a 3-pointer, giving Vassar its
largest lead of the night by 11 points, 66-55. Raptors' Lamar
Powell hit a jumper to start a six-point run to come within five
points, 66-61. Wasyl slowed the run with a layup and the and-one
making the game, 69-61.
Bard answered the eight-point deficit with a layup from Powell and
a free throw from Chris McNaughton before Snyder grabbed a rebound
from a missed fast break, layup from Johnson for the easy tip-in,
making it 71-64 and starting the game-saving 5-4 run.
"Bard played hard and didn't give us the win," Harris said. "They
hung in there and fought until the very end. This win was a big
step in terms of moving forward and getting our younger guys the
experience to win."
Vassar started the game when Snyder made an easy layup at 19:42,
forcing Bard to respond with an 11-2 run. After having their
largest lead of the night, the Raptors gave into the Brewers
offense and allowed Vassar to go on a 22-4 run, highlighted by
three 3-pointers from Johnson and one from Adkins to take a 26-15
lead.
