BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Moravian College men's basketball team defeated Goucher College, 82-55, Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action. Senior guard D.J. Strayhorn led the way for the Greyhounds with 25 points, four assists and three steals.
Strayhorn scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper for Moravian (10-8, 3-5 Landmark). Senior center Trae Lindsay tied it up with a layup for the Gophers (5-13, 3-5 Landmark). Freshman forward Matt Bosch hit a three from the wing to put the Greyhounds up 5-2. Sophomore guard Mico James of Goucher hit a three from straight away to tie it at five four minutes in.
A layup by Bosch and a three from the corner by junior center Blake English put Moravian up 10-5. A three by Goucher was answered with a three from Strayhorn to make the score 13-8 with 13:28 to play. Sophomore guard Troy Parker Jr. hit a three for Goucher, but freshman guard Jarrod Dilts responded with a three. Strayhorn then hit a lay-in on the next possession for the 18-11 lead eight minutes in.
James hit a jumper for the Gophers, but the Greyhounds answered with a 10-0 run with points by sophomore guard Izel Dickerson, Strayhorn and Dilts for the 28-13 lead with just under ten minutes to play. Sophomore guard Zachary Hall made a layup, but junior guard Mike Bonavita hit back-to-back three-pointers to put Moravian up 34-15 with 7:15 to play in the half.
After exchanging scores, back-to-back buckets by senior forward Mike Weinert and Strayhorn made the score 38-16. With under a minute to go in the half, Dickerson hit a three from the corner, but Lindsay answered with a layup as Moravian took a 43-20 lead into the locker room.
The Greyhounds shot 49-percent from the field while the Gophers shot 39-percent from the field in the first half. Moravian went 9-for-13 (69-percent) from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds held the rebounding advantage at 15-14 while committing 11 less turnovers. Strayhorn led all scoring at halftime with 16 points while James put up nine for Goucher.
Junior forward Manny Wood tallied the first bucket of the second half for Goucher. Dickerson hit a three from the wing for the Greyhounds. Lindsay answered with a layup for the Gophers to make the score 46-24 one minute in.
After trading scores, Lindsay went in for the layup while getting fouled. He converted the three-point play to make the score 51-31. English and Bonavita hit back-to-back three-pointers for the 57-31 lead with 13:40 to play. Both teams exchanged two points before Dickerson hit another three-pointer for the 62-33 lead with 11:36 remaining in the game.
A no-look pass from Strayhorn led to an easy layup for sophomore forward Garrett Kashmer to put the Greyhounds up 68-37 with eight minutes to play. Sophomore guard Richard Harris hit a three for Goucher, and sophomore guard Brian Morton II came back with a lay-in to make the score 70-42 with seven minutes remaining. Strayhorn responded with a three-pointer for the 73-42 lead. Moravian maintained its lead down the stretch as they won 82-55.
Dickerson finished the contest with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists while English scored eight points. Bonavita added 12 points while Bosch had eight points, five boards and three steals. Dilts finished with eight points.
Lindsay led the Gophers with 19 points and 12 reobunds while Harris added nine points. James put up nine points while Park finished with five points and a steal.
Moravian and Goucher shot 45-percent from the field while the Greyhounds went 16-for-33 (48-percent) from beyond the arc. Moravian hled the edge in rebounds at 33-28 while committing 12 less turnovers.
Moravian returns to the court on Monday, January 28th as they travel to Haverford College for a non-conference contest. The game is set for 7 p.m.
