Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) scored a game-high 21 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead Montclair State University to a 76-62 victory over Rutgers University-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.
Goldson, who also grabbed 13 rebounds, got help from sophomore forward Chris Torres (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), who also turned in a "double-double" performance with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Montclair State, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved its record to 6-13 overall and 3-10 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. MSU, which avoided the series sweep by Rutgers-Camden, has now won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two schools and leads the all-time series by a commanding 44-9 margin.
Rutgers-Camden, which lost its third straight game in falling to 7-13 on the year and 4-9 in the NJAC, jumped out to an 11-2 start, including five points from senior guard Yusuf Leary (Portland, Ore./Lincoln), who scored a team-high 14 points, and led for almost the entire first half. The Scarlet Raptors held that nine-point margin, the biggest in the half and their largest in the game, four more times, the last at 27-18 with 4:01 remaining in the opening period.
But Montclair State, which had chipped away several times at the deficit, scored the final 10 points of the first half, the last points coming on a driving layup and successful foul shot by sophomore guard James D'Angelo (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) with 48 seconds left that give the Red Hawks the lead, 28-27, at the halftime intermission
The second half started much like the first, as Rutgers-Camden scored the first eight points, including two 3-pointers by Leary, to take back the lead at 35-28 with 18:12 remaining.
The see-saw contest continued as MSU quickly erased the margin by scoring 16 straight points and 21 of next 23 to take a 12-point advantage at 49-37 with 13:44 to play. Goldson scored eight points with junior guards Daniel Singleton (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), who scored 11 points in the game, and Kris Bergstol (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) adding five points apiece in the scoring spree.
The Scarlet Raptors made a final run of their own, closing to within four points at 58-54 with 6:59 left. But that would be as close as Rutgers-Camden would get as they could only muster three more field goals, including two 3-pointers, the rest of the way.
Junior guard Woody Redding (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast Catholic) scored 11 points and freshman guard-forward Steven Schneider (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional), chipped in 10 points for Rutgers-Camden
Montclair State is back in action on Monday when its visits the College of Staten Island for a non-conference meeting at 7:30 p.m. Rutgers-Camden will host The College of New Jersey in New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at 8 pm.
