SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore John Wickey scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the second half to help the Babson College men's basketball team claim a huge 69-65 road victory over Springfield College in a NEWMAC matchup on Saturday.
The Beavers (11-9, 3-4 NEWMAC) took a slim 38-36 lead at the break thanks to 10 first-half points from senior Russell Braithwaite and junior Matt Palazini. Babson then gave up the lead momentarily early in the second half before moving in front to stay on a Wickey three-pointer that made it 45-42 with 15:30 to go.
Another three and a jumper by Wickey gave the Beavers a seven-point cushion, 60-53, with 2:45 left, and after Springfield (14-6, 5-2 NEWMAC) cut it to three with 1:21 remaining, Wickey drained his third trifecta of the day followed by two free throws to make it 67-59 with 20 seconds to go.
The Pride got back to within two with eight ticks on the clock, but Wickey closed out his outstanding performance with two more foul shots with five seconds left to seal the 69-65 win.
Wickey complimented his 21 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Palazini added 15 points, Braithwaite finished with 13 points and six boards, and junior Kenny Ross tallied nine points and three assists.
