DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College sophomore guard Nick Sullivan scored all 11 of his points in a 16-1, second-half run as the Aggies pulled away to a 70-53, Freedom Conference victory over visiting FDU-Florham.
The win was the third straight for Delaware Valley as it improved to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Aggies are tied with Misericordia University for second place in the Freedom standings as the first half of league play ended on Wednesday evening. FDU-Florham dropped to fourth place as the Devils are now 8-9 and 4-3.
Delaware Valley, which never trailed in the contest, opened up with a 14-4 run before the Devils countered with 10 straight. Back came the Aggies with an 11-0 spurt as four different players hit the scoring column. They led by as many as 14 before taking a 37-27 lead into the intermission.
Jay Donovan drained a trey for Delaware Valley just 24 seconds into the second half, but a 12-2 FDU-Florham run was capped by a Kevin Furlong 3-pointer to make it a 44-39 contest with 11:18 remaining.
That's when Sullivan took over. He hit a 3-pointer and, after a Devil turnover, went to the foul line where he sank both attempts. FDU-Florham missed at the other end and the Aggies moved the ball around the perimeter until Sullivan got a wide-open look and nailed another trey for eight straight points and a 49-39 advantage. The Devils' Derek Hall hit one of two free throws, but Daulton Derr came down and hit a layup and Sullivan followed another turnover with his third bomb of the run. Zach Sly then ended the 16-1 run with a three-point play for a 60-40 Aggie lead with 8:01 on the clock. FDU-Florham never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Delaware Valley finished the game 10-for-22 (45.5%) from 3-point land, with a 5-for-11 effort in each half. The Aggies held a 42-36 advantage on the board and forced 16 turnovers. Four teammates joined Sullivan in double figures, including Derr's team-high 14 points. The senior also added eight rebounds. Jeremy Beckett finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks while Donovan hit four treys and ended the night with 12 points. Sly had 10 points, five assists and four boards in the win.
Mike Williamson came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers, en route to a game-high 16 points for the Devils. Trevor Sykes added 13 points and nine rebounds while Nick Acito poured in nine points.
