CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team turned the game around with a 30-5 second half run as the Blue Jays beat the host Washington College Shoremen 63-49 on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays move to 11-7 on the season and 7-4 in the conference with their third win in their last four outings. The Shoremen fall to 2-16 overall and 2-9 in conference action.

Trailing 33-21 after five quick points to start the second half by the Shoremen, sophomore Jimmy Hammer drained a three to ignite a 30-5 run that would span a little more than 12 minutes. Senior Mike Rhoads hit a pair of free throws at the 14:10 mark to tie the game and then freshman Gene Williams hit a triple to give the Blue Jays their first lead since 12:09 in the first half. The Blue Jays would not trail again.

Hopkins pushed its lead to double digits on a fast-break layup from sophomore George Bugarinovic. Rhoads then put the punctuation on the run with a pull-up jumper at 6:06 to stake the Blue Jays to a 13-point advantage at 51-38. The Shoremen pulled within eight with a 9-4 spurt, capped off by a three-pointer in the corner from Sean Brooks. But Hopkins answered with an Adam Spengler layup followed by four straight free throws from the senior to push the lead to 14 with 1:02 to play. Kevin Cunningham got a fast-break layup with 22 seconds on the clock but junior Connor McIntyre would close out the scoring with a bucket on the other end.

Despite arriving to the Cain Athletic Center more than an hour late due to heavy traffic, Hopkins got off to a good start and led by as many as five in the opening six minutes. Hopkins went 6-of-9 from the field and led 13-8 after a Hammer layup at 14:04. Washington College took over from there, using a 17-3 run to take a 25-16 lead by the four-minute mark. John Weston tied the game with a fast-break layup at 11:45 and Pat Morgan hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Shoremen up 19-13. Junior Aleksandar Nikolic hit a bucket in the paint and McIntyre hit one of two free throws to make it a three-point game with 7:52 to go in the half.

Morgan hit another three-pointer, his third in four possessions, followed by a Cunningham layup and the lead was eight. Stephen Poarch and Spengler traded trips to the free throw line before a Sean Flanigan layup put WC up 27-17. McIntyre then sandwiched buckets around a free throw from Charlie McShane and Washington College led 28-21 at the half. Brooks would open the second-half scoring with a three-pointer, followed by a Cunningham fast-break bucket and the home team led 33-21. It would be all Hopkins from there.

McIntyre posted his first career double-double with 13 points (6-8 FG) and a career-high 13 rebounds. Spengler led all scorers with 15 points for the Blue Jays while also handing out five assists. Hammer finished in double figures as well, chipping in 11 points while grabbing seven boards. Cunningham and Morgan each knocked down 12 points to pace the Shoremen.

Hopkins returns to action and wraps up its three-game road swing on Saturday as the Blue Jays travel to Allentown, PA to take on the Muhlenberg Mules. Tip off from Memorial Hall is set for 4:00 pm.
