The Carthage College men's basketball team (7-9, 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) edged CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (4-12, 0-5 CCIW), 65-61, on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at R.A. Faganel Hall in Elmhurst, Ill.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with seven lead changes, four ties and neither team holding more than a five-point advantage. Carthage led by three points at halftime, 29-26. The Red Men led most of the second period. There were three ties in the second half, and the Bluejays held a one-point lead, 46-45, at 9:47. Carthage went up, to stay, 47-46, at 8:16 on a layup by Marlon Senior. The Red Men's biggest lead was seven points, 55-48, at 4:23. Elmhurst pulled to within one, 62-51, with 12 seconds to play on a three-pointer by Alex Morgunov, but three free throws by Donte Logan in the final nine seconds gave Carthage a four-point decision, 65-61.
The Red Men shot 40 percent (23-58), including four-of-17 three-pointers, while the Bluejays shot 39 percent (24-62), including five-of-17 from three-point range. Carthage got to the free-throw line 22 times and made 15, while Elmhurst converted eight-of-10. The Bluejays had a 45-35 rebounding advantage but turned the ball over 21 times to just 15 for the Red Men.
Carthage's leading scorer, Tyler Pierce (Sr., Westmont, Ill.), did not play. Mitch Thompson (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led the Red Men with a game-high 21 points on nine-of-16 field goals and eight rebounds. Marlon Senior (Jr., Skokie, Ill./Niles North) added nine points with eight rebounds. Nick Sanford led Elmhurst with 16 points and a game-high 15 boards. D'Ante Foster and Alex Morgunov each had 14 points, Foster with five rebounds and five steals and Morgunov with six boards.
Carthage entertains conference-opponent and No. 20 Wheaton College (Ill., 13-3, 3-2 CCIW ) on Saturday, Jan. 19 in a 7 p.m. contest at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
