Carter's 13 Points and 10 Boards Leads No. 25 RIC Past UMD, 70-64

North Dartmouth, Mass.-Senior guard Tahrike Carter (Brooklyn, NY) scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as No. 25 Rhode Island College defeated UMass Dartmouth, 70-64, in Little East Conference men's basketball action played at the Tripp Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

 

UMass Dartmouth (2-12, 0-6 LEC) tied the game, 64-64, on a three-pointer by junior guard John Genkos (Worcester, MA) with just over a minute remaining. The Anchormen (13-2, 5-1 LEC) forced a missed shot and got a turnover, while Carter sank two free throws and senior guard Ethan Gaye (Providence, RI) sank four more from the charity stripe, to seal the win.

 

Gaye added 11 points, while Carter chipped in with three assists and three steals. Senior center Steven Roberts (New Haven, CT), along with junior guards Michael Palumbo (Providence, RI) and Tom DeCiantis (North Kingstown, RI), each scored 10 points.

 

RIC shot 40 percent (19-for-47) from the field, 36 percent (5-for-14) from downtown and 63 percent (27-for-43) from the free throw line. UMD shot 46 percent (22-for-48) from the field, 53 percent (8-for-15) from three-point range and 60 percent (12-for-20) from the charity stripe.

 

The visitors held a slight advantage in rebounding, 37-30.

 

 UMD sophomore guard Mike Rotando (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ) scored a game-high 18 points to go along with five boards and four assists. Sophomore center Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, MA) contributed 12 points, while Genkos added 10.

 

In upcoming action, the Anchormen will continue Little East Conference play at Plymouth State on Saturday, Jan. 19 (3 p.m.).
