LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team put the clamps on a five-game losing skid by shooting past Concordia University Chicago 78-47 on Tuesday.
The Eagles took the lead for good when Daniel Montano hit a pair of free throws to hand the hosts a 6-4 lead with 15:35 to play in the first. The free throws opened a 14-0 run which finished with two more free throws from Dale Renshaw at the 12:00 mark.
Concordia pulled with 10 points at 25-15 with 6:08 left in the opening half but a quick 8-0 run stretched the lead to 18 points. Renshaw hit a jumper just before the buzzer to pad the lead to 40-19 at the break.
The second half brought more of the same. Concordia was able to pull within 16 by virtue of five straight points to start. It took more than three minutes for Benedictine to score before a John Dodson jumper. A layup from Michael Woolf opened an 11-0 run which extended the lead to 31 points at 57-26 with 10:19 remaining. Raphael Oglesby capped the run with a layup.
Tim McGinty netted 12 points and Jamison Montgomery also came off the bench to tally 12. Benedictine shot 59.6 percent for the game while using strong defense to limit Concordia Chicago to just 28.9 percent. The bench contributed 48 points and Benedictine held a huge 38-12 edge in points in the paint.
Benedictine (4-13, 2-6) will welcome the rival leaders of the South Division, Aurora University, to the Rice Center on a special Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Don't miss the unveiling of the new Ernie as well as a t-shirt giveaway.
