SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore Chris Viqueira scored a career- and game-high 29 points, including seven three-pointers and senior Travon Vann finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and nine assists as the Salisbury University men's basketball team escaped with a 79-73 victory over the University of Mary Washington Saturday to stay unbeaten in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Viqueira shot 8-for-10 from the field, 7-of-9 from three-point range and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line to lead Salisbury (12-4, 3-0 CAC) to its third straight win. Junior Tim Harwood added 13 points, two assists and two steals.

Trailing, 33-29, at halftime and 63-51 with less than eight minutes to go, Mary Washington (7-8, 1-3 CAC) used a 21-9 run to close the game. Taylor Johnson hit a three-pointer from the corner to cut the SU lead to 75-73 with 12 second left but Harwood and Vann each knocked down a pair from the line to ensure the win.

Salisbury shot 19-for-42 from the field (45.2 percent) while UMW, which hit 12 of its 24 shots in the first half, was 25-of-56 overall (44.6 percent). The Sea Gulls turned 18 Eagles' turnovers into 24 points.

The Eagles, who scored game highs of 28 points in the paint and 12 off of second chances, were led by Johnson, with 17 points. Sean Armstrong and Bradley Reister had 14 points and 13 points, respectively, with Armstrong coming up with nine rebounds.

After UMW's Dylan Farinet hit a jumper on the game's first possession, Salisbury ran off eight straight points to take control. Vann and Elijah Gore each tallied three points in the run, which saw Salisbury leading 8-2 at the 14:52 mark.

Mary Washington closed to within two at 8-6 when Armstrong and Lamont Fields knocked down a layup and jumper, but a Viqueira three-pointer and Harwood layup pushed the SU lead to 13-6 with just under 10 minutes left in the half.

Viquiera nailed two more threes to extend the edge to 21-8 with 7:59 remaining. Another three from Gore, assisted by Vann, gave Salisbury its largest advantage of the game with 6:11 left. The Eagles, though, closed the half on a 17-3 run to cut the deficit at the break.

Salisbury returns to action Wednesday, hosting Wesley College at 7:30 p.m.
