The University of Rochester men's basketball team was held one point off its season low, but held the University of Chicago to its season low in a 64-47 defensive battle Friday night at the Palestra.
#4 ranked Rochester moves to 13-0 on the season, 2-0 in the UAA behind another great all-around performance from senior guard John DiBartolomeo who had 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Sophomore Tyler Sankes helped lead UR inside with 14 points on 7-9 shooting. For the game, the Yellowjackets dominated inside outscoring the Maroons 40-22 inside and holding a 33-27 rebounding edge.
For Chicago (7-6, 1-1 UAA), freshman Jordan Smith led the Maroons with 15 points off the bench on 5-7 shooting from the floor. Leading scorer Alex Pyper was held to just four points on the night and point guard Royce Muskeyvalley battled foul trouble all night and finished with just two points and two assists.
The Yellowjackets got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 9-1 lead four minutes in and would never trail during the entire contest.
Chicago got as close as three with two minutes to go in the first half, but UR held strong and went into the break with a four point cushion, 27-23.
Midway through the second half, DiBartolomeo scored 10 points in a 16-2 run that put the game out of reach. The run which ended with 9:24 left in the game ballooned the lead to 17 at 51-34. The All-American DiBartolomeo then found Sankes inside for some easy lay-ups for the sophomore who finished one point shy of his career high.
The Yellowjackets finished the game shooting 52% from the floor, while the Maroons could only muster 31% shooting on only 16 made field goals.
Rob Reid also had a solid game inside for Rochester, chipping in six points and eight rebounds. Two of the points came on a fast break dunk early in the second half which energized his teammates and the crowd.
The win pushes UR's home win streak to 18 straight in the UAA and 31 overall in the regular season.
Up next for UR will be a tough test at home on Sunday against defending UAA champion Washington University in St. Louis who got a last minute win against Emory University Friday night. The Bears are ranked #12 in the latest d3hoops.com poll. The Maroons travel down to Atlanta to face Emory on Sunday.
