(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 71-48 win over Westminster College tonight (Saturday, January 9, 2013) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the PAC. With the loss, the Titans fall to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in the PAC.
Thomas More jumped out to a 19-8 lead when junior power forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) made a lay-up with 8:39 to play in the first half. Westminster answered with an 11-2 run capped by an Anthony Thomas lay-up with 2:21 to play in the half to cut the lead to 21-19. The Saints used a 5-0 to extend the lead to 26-19 when sophomore shooting guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made two free-throws with 28-seconds to play in the opening half. The Titans closed out the half on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 26-23 at halftime when Mark Hockenberry made a lay-up with 18-seconds to play in the half.
The Saints opened the second half on a 25-15 run to increase the lead to 51-38 with 9:53 to play in the game when Mumford made two free-throws. Westminster responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 51-43 on a Doug Smith three-pointer with 8:58 to play in the game. Thomas More closed out the game on a 20-5 run capped by two free-throws by junior power forward Al Upshaw (Cincinnati, Ohio/Gamble Montessori) with 1:59 to play in the game for the final score of 71-48.
Housley was joined in double-figure scoring by Marshall with and sophomore shooting guard Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Southern) with 12 points each. Mumford, Housley and Marshall led the team on the boards with six rebounds each. Marshall, senior shooting guard Ross Renken (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) led the team in assists with six each.
Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (January 12) when it hosts PAC-leading Saint Vincent College at 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
