Lane gets 200th win as Transy tops Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Ethan Spurlin fired in 21 points Wednesday and Brandon Rash added 18, helping Transylvania to a 72-58 win over Franklin and giving head coach Brian Lane his 200th career win over 12 seasons.
 
The Pioneers won their fifth straight game to improve to 9-3 overall, 4-1 in Heartland Conference  play, while the Grizzlies are 7-5, 2-3 HCAC after losing to Transy for the eighth time in a row.
 
Lane came into the season with 191 career wins after 11 years at Transy. He trails only Hall of Famer Don Lane (509) on the school's all-time list. Lane is now 200-107 for his career.
 
Spurlin was six of 13 from the field and nine of 10 from the charity stripe. He also had eight rebounds.  Rash was seven of 14 from the field and had a team-high nine boards.  Barrett Meyer added 15 points on four of seven shooting as the Pioneers combined to hit 24 of 47 shots for 51 percent.
 
Franklin, which received 21 points from Gunner Erwin,  was 18 of 52 overall for 35 percent from the field.  Erwin had only two points at halftime.
 
Transy never trailed in the game, although Franklin cut its deficit to as few as four points on three occasions in the second half, the last at 42-38 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Pioneers outscored the home team 30-20 the rest of the way, building its lead back up to 17,  72-55, with a minute to play.
 
Transy led in the first half by as many as 15 points before settling for a 29-17 cushion at intermission. Rash led the way with nine points and Spurlin added seven.
 
Transy shot 48 percent (12 of 25) in the opening 20 minutes while holding the home team to just 25 percent (six of 24).  No Franklin player scored more than five points in the half.
 
The Pioneers return to the Beck Center on Saturday to face Defiance in a 1 p.m. tip-off. Transy will celebrate Alumni Day prior to the contest and during halftime.
