Second Half Rally Comes Just a Bit too Late as Beavers Fall to Gators

NEW YORK – Jordan Ortega recorded his first career double-double and put on a rebounding clinic as the sophomore pulled down 12 rebounds – seven offensive – to go along with his career best 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting but the late rally by Allegheny College (6-4) downed the City College of New York (4-8), 72-63, on Saturday evening at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

Ortega added one block and one steal and sparked the Beavers to several key runs throughout the game. Junior Brandon Reeves led CCNY with 15 points and added eight rebounds while David Solano hit a career-best four three pointers to add 12 points off of the Beavers bench. Solano tied his season high with three assists and two steals and went 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Anthony Lewis, who entered the game with 13:34 remaining in the contest, sparked an 8-0 run to cut the Gators lead to three, 53-50.

Trailing 52-39 with 11 minutes of action remaining, Lewis posted three consecutive offensive rebounds and  Paul Dail dished out three assists in a span of two minutes to cut Allegheny's lead to three.

Lewis scored eight points and pulled down four offensive rebounds while picking up one block shot and one steal. Dail added nine assists, five rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes of action.

The Beavers came out hot to begin the second half and cut their deficit to one, 32-31, sparked by two offensive rebounds by Ortega.

Down by as much as eight with 8:16 remaining in the first half, Solano and Zachary Heiss hit two clutch three-pointers to cut Allegheny's lead to two. Ortega and Israel Vickers, making his second start of the season, pressured the ball and forced two turnovers that led to a four point swing.

Ortega came out strong right from the tip-off as the sophomore forward posted six points and seven rebounds in the first half.

The Beavers return to City University of New York Athletic Conference action on Jan. 4, 2013 as CCNY heads to the Hunter Sportsplex to face the Hawks at 7 p.m.
