MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Josh Pittman's game-high 18 points led visiting Guilford College past Maryville College Friday, 73-63, in nonconference basketball play. Rookie Zeb Richardson added 10 points and a game- and career-high 14 rebounds for the Quakers (8-2), who have won six of their last seven games.
Guilford overcame an early first-half deficit with a 14-0 run midway through the period. Quakers' senior Travis Tracy scored five points during the burst, which helped the guests to a 33-26 halftime lead.
The Scots (4-5) hung around in the second half and trimmed the deficit to 57-55 with 5:38 to play on two Jose Agosto free throws, but Guilford reeled off the next eight points. Maryville drew no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Guilford had four students in double-figure scoring, led by Pittman's 18. The senior also added a game-high seven assists and committed only one turnover in 36 minutes. Matt McCarthy finished with 13 points and three assists. Travis Tracy made all three shots from the floor and added 11 points, two assists and two steals.
Maryville's Chrstian Ford scored 12 points and dished out six assists to lead the Scots. Oscar Butler finished with 10 points for Maryville, which managed only 30.4 percent shooting from the floor. Joey Bodewig added six points and a team-best nine rebounds.
The Quakers are back in action Saturday (12/29) against Birmingham Southern College in a contest hosted by Maryville.
