Rutgers-Camden Ends Losing Streak to Montclair State, 69-59

Camden, NJ - Sophomore guard/forward Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) tied his career high with 24 points and earned his fifth double-double of the season to lead the Rutgers University-Camden men's basketball team over Montclair State University, 69-59, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.

The victory snaps the Scarlet Raptors' 10-game losing streak against the Red Hawks, dating back to their last win on Jan. 28, 2004 at Montclair State, 77-70.

Rutgers-Camden improves to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the NJAC. Montclair State, which had won 33 of its last 34 against Rutgers-Camden entering the game, falls to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC.

The Red Hawks now lead the all-time series, 43-9.

The Scarlet Raptors took the lead for good, 8-7, on a three-pointer by junior guard Woody Redding (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) early in the first half, sparking a nine-point run that included a pair of jumpers by Russell.

By halftime, the Scarlet Raptors held a 36-21 halftime lead behind 14 points from Russell. Russell and junior forward Robert Anders (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) both grabbed seven first-half rebounds to help Rutgers-Camden hold a 24-18 edge off the boards.

Sophomore guard James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ, West Morris Central) had five first-half points for the Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks had 17 first-half turnovers, while the Scarlet Raptors had nine.

Rutgers-Camden led by as many as 23 points in the second half (50-27) before settling for the 10-point victory. It was the Raptors' first victory over Montclair State in Camden since Dec. 6, 1991 (67-64).

Russell finished with game highs of 24 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots, while adding two assists.

Redding canned nine points and dished off a team-high four assists, while junior guard Brandyn Wims (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) scored eight points and senior guard Yusuf Leary (Portland, OR/Lincoln) canned seven. Sophomore guard Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ/Winslow Township) and Anders each added six points, with Anders grabbing eight rebounds.

Rutgers-Camden held a 41-33 advantage off the boards and shot 22-for-53 (41.5 percent) from the field and 20-for-27 (74.1) from the foul line. Montclair State shot 22-for-58 (37.9) from the floor and 10-for-18 (55.6) from the line.

The Red Hawks received 13 points apiece from a pair of guards, senior Ken Rubenstein (South Orange, NJ, Columbia) and junior Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune). D'Angelo added seven points and a game-high seven assists, while freshman center Slavko Bajovic (Cliffside Park, NJ, Cliffside Park) paced the Red Hawks with eight rebounds.

Montclair State returns to action Wednesday with an 8 p.m. non-conference game at Immaculata University.
