Ninth-ranked Wheaton tops North Central (Minn.) 73-49

Minneapolis, Minn. – The Wheaton Thunder men's basketball team was a 73-49 winner at North Central University (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon to conclude Wheaton's two-game trip to the Twin Cities. Wheaton, ranked ninth in the D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, improves to 10-1 overall. The Thunder will be off until January 2 when the squad opens CCIW play against Illinois Wesleyan University in King Arena at 7 PM.

Tyler Peters led four Thunder players who scored in double digits on Saturday with 17 points as the junior shot 8-for-11 from the field. Peters distributed four assists and grabbed five rebounds on the night. Tad Fisher scored 16 points, with three assists, as the junior shot 4-for-6 from behind the three-point arc. Senior guard Nate Serenius scored 13 points, draining three three-pointers. Sophomore Caleb DeMoss scored 10 points off the Thunder bench with four assists. Junior forward Nathan Haynes scored seven points and he grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Peter Smith added seven points and five rebounds. Wheaton's bench out-scored the Rams' reserves 26-4 in the game thanks in large part to 23 combined points by the duo of Serenius and Caleb DeMoss.

Wheaton shot 43.5% (30-69) from the field, with 50% (11-22) from behind the three-point arc and 33.3% (2-6) at the free throw line. The Rams recorded a 43.2% (19-44) field goal percentage, with a 0-for-4 effort from three-point range and 57.9% (11-19) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Rams 39-33, with a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Jordan Harrell led North Central with 18 points and five rebounds. Bryce Burkman scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the hosts. Nathan Roeder scored nine points, with four assists and three steals.

Wheaton led the Rams 17-16 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter when Serenius drained three-pointers on the guests' next two possessions to increase the Wheaton lead to 23-16. DeMoss and Peters each made a three-pointer in the final 3:15 of the opening half as Wheaton held a 33-23 lead at the halftime intermission.

A pair of three-pointers by Fisher in the first three minutes of the second half extended the Wheaton advantage to 41-28 with 17:55 left in regulation. The Thunder maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Wheaton's largest lead of the game was 24 points on three different occasions in the second half, including the 73-49 final score.
