Oberlin, Ohio – It wasn't the prettiest game, but in the end the Oberlin College men's basketball team found a way to upend the visiting Wolverines of Grove City College, 57-55, on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
 
After building up an 11-point lead at 51-40 with 6:52 left to play, the Yeomen found themselves fighting to hang in the closing moments as the Wolverines were able to shrink the Yeomen lead down to one at 56-55 with 2:00 left on the clock.
 
In the final minute the Yeomen were able to hang on as Austin Little came away with a steal before Geoff Simpson would add a key block with just 10 seconds to play to help secure the win.
 
Simpson led the Yeomen with 14 points to go along with a career-high 15 boards, while also matching a career-best with six assists. Andrew Fox added 13 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, while center Randy Ollie chipped in with 10 rebounds and a career-high six blocks to run his rejection total to 21 on the season. In all the Yeomen defense racked up 11 blocks in the game.
 
In the opening half, rookie Ian Campbell's fastbreak layup (Watch) made it a 16-9 Oberlin advantage at the 8:09 mark. The Wolverines would eventually cut their deficient down two, 22-20, but Fox would cash in a triple-try (Watch) just before the first-half horn to give OC a 25-20 cushion heading into the locker room.
 
The second half featured an array of runs by both teams. Oberlin's first 11-point lead came at the 16:21 mark when Little's run-out layup (Watch) would make it a 33-22 game. However, Grove City responded with a 15-5 run to get within one at 38-37 with 11:06 left to play.
 
The Yeomen would answer right back with a 13-3 spurt of their own that featured threes from Campbell (Watch), Fox (Watch) and Simpson (Watch) to make 51-40. From there they were able to fend off one last push from the Wolverines to hold on for the win.
 
Oberlin was able to overcome 19 turnovers that led to 19 points for Grove City. With the Yeomen improved to 4-6 on the year, while the Wolverines dropped to 1-7.
 
Oberlin will now be away from competition for nearly three weeks as the team prepares for finals and the holiday recess. The Yeomen's next game is not until January 3 when they travel to Elmira.
