Baruch Uses Late Run to Top York Men's Basketball

NEW YORK, NY—The York College men's basketball team fell to Baruch College by a score of 74-59 in a CUNY Athletic Conference contest Tuesday night. York controlled the Bearcats throughout most of the game but could not finish in the remaining minutes of the second half.

The Cardinals jumped out early in the ball game going on a 10-2 run and showed tough defense, forcing three turnovers.  The game was tied going into halftime at 28 apiece after a layup at the buzzer by Bearcats' guard Raymond De La Cruz. York shot 37% from the field in the first half.

In the second half the Cardinals struggled offensively and could not stop Baruch with the game tied at 42 and 9:53 on the clock. The Bearcats (6-2, 3-1 CUNYAC) went on a 32-17 run to close the game--at one point going ahead by 18 points. York shot 64% from the free throw line compared to Baruch's 84% in the second half. York tried to cut the lead to 10 but a big three point shot by Baruch's Granville Gittens put the lead back to 13 with 5:37 to go to help put the game out of reach.

Junior guard Matt Feldman and sophomore forward Joshua Vital each scored 14 points for Baruch. York guard Jose Arroyo led the Cardinals with 15 points and four rebounds, while senior guard Tony Vails had 13 points and five rebounds in a strong effort. Senior center Shamir Wilkinson--a force down low-- fouled out with nine minutes to play. He finished with eight points and three rebounds.  Sophomore guard Du'Quan Lawsonadded eleven points and six assists.

York (5-5, 1-2 CUNYAC) will return to the hardwood after the holidays on January 2, 2013 when they travel to take on Rutgers-Newark at 2:30 pm.
