Cortland's Jeremy Smith and Head Coach Tom Spanbauer Reach Milestones in 73-60 Win at SUNYIT

UTICA, N.Y. – Senior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) became the 21st player in school history to reach the career 1,000-point mark and head coach Tom Spanbauer won his 300th career game at Cortland defeated host SUNYIT, 73-60, in a non-league game. The Red Dragons improved to 6-1 with the victory.

Smith finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 three-point shooting. His trey with 18:18 left in the second half pushed him over the 1,000-point mark and he now has 1,004 career points.

Spanbauer improved his career head coaching record to 300-202 in 19 seasons, including 18 years at Cortland. He won 12 games in one season as the head coach at Alfred University before coming to Cortland. Spanbauer is 287-189 at Cortland.

Senior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) led the Red Dragons with 18 points and pulled down five rebounds. He hit 3-of-7 three-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Senior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) finished with 16 points and six assists and Smith dished out four assists in addition to scoring his 12 points.

Junior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) and senior John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) chipped in with eight points and five rebounds apiece. Sophomore Lamard Herron (Westbury) led the team with six rebounds.

T'Andre Richardson led four double-figure scorers for SUNYIT (0-4) with 16 points. De'Ondray Tape finished with 12 points, while Kaleel Johnson and Desmian Greer scored 11 points each. Derek Rowe led the Wildcats with seven rebounds and Greer handed out three assists.

Cortland shot 46 percent from the field and 37 percent (11-of-30) from the three-point arc. SUNYIT was held to 35 percent from the floor and just 18 percent (3-of-17) from long range. The Wildcats made 21-of-27 free throws to just 6-of-12 shooting for the Red Dragons.

Cortland, which never trailed, led 32-28 with 1:12 left in the first half. Smith's three-pointer with 1:04 left in the half and Harrison Hefele's (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) layup with 37 seconds remaining gave the Red Dragons a 37-28 halftime lead.

Two Winter baskets and Smith's milestone-breaking three-pointer pushed Cortland's lead to 44-28 two minutes into the second half. SUNYIT got as close as 49-40 after a Johnson trey with 13:13 left, but Manning scored six points during an ensuing 8-2 run that put Cortland up 57-42 with 11:39 on the clock. SUNYIT got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Cortland will play at Nazareth College on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. in a non-league contest.
