Palumbo & Burton Lead No. 14 Anchormen Past Salve Regina, 66-42

Newport, R.I.-Junior guard Mike Palumbo (Providence, RI) scored 11 points and knocked down three from downtown, while sophomore center Chris Burton (New Rochelle, NY) fell one board shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, as the Rhode Island College men's basketball team cruised to a 66-42 win over Salve Regina on Tuesday night at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

 

The No. 14 Anchormen (7-0) remain undefeated, while the Seahawks (4-2) suffer just their second setback of the '12-13 campaign.

 

Senior guard Tahrike Carter (Brooklyn, NY) contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals, while senior center Steven Roberts (New Haven, CT) chipped in with eights points and two boards in nine minutes off the bench. Burton was a force on the defensive end, making a game-high six steals.

 

 RIC shot 46 percent (26-for-57) from the field, 36 percent (5-for-14) from three-point land and 64 percent (9-for-14) from the charity stripe. The Seahawks shot 31 percent (15-for-49), did not make a three-pointer (0-for-11) and 75 percent (12-for-16) from the free throw line.

 

SRU turned the ball over 28 times, with RIC picking up 16 steals. The visitors also held an edge in rebounding, 40-31.

 

 The Anchormen opened the game on a 10-2 run and never looked back. RIC increased its advantage to double digits, 26-16, at 7:31 on a freshman center Mike Neal (Pawtucket, RI) layup and led by as many as 15 before taking a 35-22 lead into halftime.

 

The second half was all RIC as the hosts would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The Anchormen led by as many as 27, 64-37, in the final frame.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to WPI on Thursday, Dec. 6 (7 p.m.).
