Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener to Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – Three starters scored in double figures and Frostburg State shot 46 percent from the floor but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats suffered a 109-83 loss to Marietta in the first round of the 42nd Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament, Friday night.

As impressive as FSU (0-1) was on the stat sheet, the Pioneers (1-0) were just as good. Four Marietta starters finished in double figures and the team shot 56.2 percent from the field in earning a spot in the championship game tomorrow. The hosts will play Ohio Wesleyan at 7:00 pm while FSU will face Defiance in the consolation game at 5:00 pm.

Bobcat senior Christian Jackson led all players with 25 points behind 7-of-14 shooting (50.0%) and 11-of-12 (91.6%) from the foul line. Classmates Kwambina Coker and DeSean Antoine added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

J.J. Martin led the Pioneers with 16 points followed by Brennan McKean (13 pts.), Scott Kimmey (12 pts.) and Jason Humphrey (10 pts.). Humphrey led both teams with 12 rebounds.

A pair of Jackson free throws cut the Bobcat deficit to one point, 19-18, at 12:34 before Marietta used a 17-2 run for a 16-point cushion at 9:50. The hosts led by as many as 18 points in the closing minutes of the opening stanza, but FSU collected an 11-4 run over the final 3:22 to trim the score to 52-41 at halftime.

Marietta built its lead to 21 points before five minutes had ticked off the second half clock and it cruised from there. The hosts pushed their lead to a game-high 38 points, 90-52, just past the halfway point.

A late surge, helped Frostburg bring its deficit back under 30 points. Down 98-66 with 3:40 to play in regulation, the Bobcats' Nick Smoot hit a three-pointer and Royce Hunsberger hit a jumper with just over a minute left as they trimmed the deficit to 22, 104-82.

Frostburg finished 29-of-63 from the floor (46.0%) and made 20-of-25 free throws (80.0%). The difference came beyond the arc as FSU made just 5-of-20 (25.0%) three-pointers and Marietta was 16-of-31 (51.6%) from deep.
