Lewis Strong Off the Bench, Late Rally Just Short as Three Pointers Drop Beavers

More news about: CCNY

NEW YORKAnthony Lewis was 7-for-12 from the field to lead the City College of New York with 16 points and eight rebounds off of the bench and the Beavers second unit posted 39 points but 10 three-pointers for Vassar College were too much to overcome as the Brewers (3-2) defeated CCNY (3-4), 88-77, on Sunday afternoon at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

Five of Lewis' rebounds led to second chance points as the two-time City University of New York Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week continues to dominate on the offensive glass. Brandon Reeves recorded 14 points and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line while guard Terence Johnston scored 10 points on 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in his first start of the season.

Paul Dail tied a season-high with four points and the senior guard dished out a career-high nine assists in the afternoon contest.

Down 22 at halftime, the Beavers outscored the Brewers 51-40 in the second half and cut their deficit to 10 before two clutch shots from beyond the arc by Sam Rappaport cut CCNY's rally short.

After taking just three free throws in the first half, the Beavers went to the charity stripe 27 times in the second half and shot 74 percent from the line.

Vassar fired from away from all cylinders right from the start as the Brewers shot 65 percent from the field in the first half to head into halftime with a 48-26 lead. The Brewers connected on seven three-pointers (nine attempts) and shot 79 percent from the free throw line.

Jon Herzog went 5-for-6 from the field to lead all players with 15 points in the opening period as all six of the guard's shots were from beyond the arc. Forward Luka Ladan was a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe to add 11 points in the first half. For the game, five Brewers reached double figures while Alex Synder posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Lewis led all Beavers with seven points, off of the bench, as CCNY recorded 16 bench points in the first half. Nathan Lopez connected on two shots from beyond the arc to add six points while guard David Solano, making the first start of his collegiate career, added two three-pointers for six points in the opening period.

The Beavers host Wilkes University on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6 PM right here at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
