Zuccaro’s Career High 31 Points Paces Mount Saint Vincent Past St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Riverdale, N.Y. – Led by a career-high 31 points from junior James Zuccaro, the College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team picked up an important 83-66 Skyline Conference win over St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a three game losing streak this season for the Dolphins and a 14 game slid against the Golden Eagles.

The Dolphins trailed only briefly on Saturday and used an 8-0 run in the middle stages of the first half to turn a five point deficit into a three point advantage. Stephen Oliver (Brooklyn, N.Y.) started the spurt with back-to-back triples and Shaquille Cunningham scored in transition to put the Mount in front 22-19 with 8:13 left before the half.

The Golden Eagles would get the game back to a single point on the following possession, but the Dolphins never surrendered the lead and built their advantage to nine points after a 10-4 spurt keyed by a pair of Zuccaro buckets.

St. Joseph's quickly responded with nine of the next 11 points to slice the Mount Saint Vincent lead to just two, but the Dolphins closed the period with baskets from Zuccaro and D'Andre McPhatter (Bronx, N.Y.) to take a 38-32 lead into the intermission.

Coming out of the break, the Dolphins maintained a six point lead before going over four minutes without a point. St. Joseph's could not capitalize, getting only a Cody Lohsen basket in transition over the same stretch.

After regaining a six point lead, Mount Saint Vincent got its advantage to double-figures after an Anthony Woods (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) layup and then a key three-point field goal with 7:21 left in regulation.

Mount Saint Vincent would not lets its lead get below nine points the rest of the night and took a game-high 19 point advantage in the final minute following two Zuccaro conversions from the free-throw line.

The Dolphins finished the game shooting just shy of 42-percent from the floor and knocked down six three pointers. The Mount Saint Vincent defense also forced 27 turnovers, leading to a 33-9 edge in points off of miscues.

Zuccaro finished the night 12-for-23 from the floor and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line on his way to the Dolphins' first 30 point performance of the season. He completed his first double-double of the season with 11 rebounds and also added three assists and a steal.

Cunningham finished in double-figures for the fifth time this season with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Woods chipped in with seven important points, a career-high, and five rebounds.

Junior Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) totaled nine points and a pair of assists, while McPhatter and Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded eight and seven points respectively. Caputo matched Zuccaro for the team-high in helpers.

The Golden Eagles got a big game from Keith Anderson who finished with 28 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Evan Mohammed scored 12 points, while Sean McCarthy added 11 and a game-high five assists.

Saturday's win gets Mount Saint Vincent to 2-3 overall on the season and back to .500 in the league at 1-1. The Dolphins will look for their second straight victory on Tuesday when they play host to Vassar. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
