Worcester, MA --- Spurred by a 33-20 advantage on the glass, the WPI men's basketball remained undefeated as the host Engineers coasted by Lasell 94-62 in a non-conference match-up on Thursday evening. WPI, who are receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 is now 6-0 while the visiting Lasers dip to 1-4 on the young season.
Minutes into the game, Lasell led by one point but relinquished its lead shortly thereafter and the Engineers never trailed again. A pair of 3-pointers by Marco Coppola (Watertown, MA) at the 15 minute mark sparked a 17-0 run that catapulted WPI out in front. The Engineers dominated the opening stanza and maintained a 20-point cushion for most of the half. With 3:55 remaining in the first half, the Lasers went on an 8-0 run but it wasn't enough to significantly cut the deficit. Coppola and Sam Longwell (Acton, MA) combined for 29 of WPI's 52 points in the first half propelling the Crimson and Gray to a 52-28 halftime lead.
For the game, the Engineer offense shot 56.9% from the floor and went 78.6% from the charity stripe. Zach Karalis (North Andover, MA) led the charge in the second half tallying 14 of his 16 points. Longwell nabbed a game-high 18 points for the Engineers, 15 of which came in the first half. The sophomore added four assists and a steal on the night. Coppola added 16 including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, while Aaron Davis (Marshfield, MA) and Ryan Kolb(Southington, CT) added nine and eight respectively. Davis paced all players with six assists and three steals on the night.
WPI's bench combined for 41 points including seven from Domenick Mastascusa (North Reading, MA) and five from both Chad LeBove (Shrewsbury, MA) and Craig Melillo(Wilmington, MA). The game was determined by play in the paint, where WPI scored 46 of their 94 points including eighteen second-chance buckets. The Engineers also controlled the boards grabbing 33 rebounds including thirteen on the offensive end. Kolb pulled down eight boards while Longwell and LeBove each added four. Defensively, the Crimson and Gray forced 17 Laser turnovers which they parlayed into 28 points.
Brandon Ganesh (Wellington, FL) and Sean Bertanza (Seymour, CT) reached double digits for Lasell with 11 and 10 points respectively. Bertanza and Rob Watts (Lafayette, NJ) pulled down six boards apiece. As a team, the Lasers were a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line with Ganesh and Arthur Alexander (Port St. Lucie, FL) each canning all four of their attempts.
Both teams hit road for their next contest on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. WPI heads to Bangor, Maine to take Husson while Lasell ventures to New Haven, Connecticut to face nationally-ranked Albertus Magnus in its GNAC opener.
