Centre rallies late for OT win over Transylvania

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre used an 8-2 run at the end of overtime Wednesday to hold off Transylvania 70-64 in men's college basketball action at Alumni Gym.

The Pioneers, ranked 16th in the country, are 2-2 on the season while the Colonels are 3-2.

Brandon Rash, who finished with 12 points and six rebounds, canned a pair of free throws to tie the contest at 62-62 with 2:21 to play. But the Pioneers would get only a layup by Ethan Spurlin at the 1:27 mark the rest of the way as Centre got the win.

Transy spotted the home team a 2-0 lead to open the game, then went on an 18-5 run to open an 11-point cushion at 18-7 at the 12:35 mark. Spurlin had eight points during the run while Barrett Meyer poured in five.

The lead would grow to as many as 16 in the first half, 30-16, on a Parker Stansberry triple at the 4:24 mark. Transy led by nine, 34-25, at intermission as Spurlin scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Stansberry added nine points, canning three of four from long range.

Transy shot 48 percent from the field in the first half compared to 32 percent for the Colonels. Josh Karsner had eight points to lead Centre.

Transy maintained its lead for much of the second half before Centre caught up at 40-40 midway through the period. Transy led by seven, 50-43, on a Rash layup with six minutes to play.

Centre managed to snag the lead on a three-pointer at the 2:20 mark when Karsner connected. Rash's old-fashioned three-point play under the two-minute mark put the Pioneers back on top, 54-53. Meyer had two free throws to put Transy up by three, 56-53, with 15 seconds to go before the Colonels scored after a timeout to send the game to overtime.

Spurlin had a season-high 29 points and the All-American added 12 rebounds for a double double. He was 10 of 20 from the field and nine of 13 from the free throw line. Transy shot 39 percent from the field for the game while Centre was at 42 percent.

The Colonels were 12 of 25 from long range while Transy converted five of 22 from behind the arc.

Stansberry finished with nine points while  Karsner led Centre with 21 points and Blake Scinta added 14.

Rash moved up in the Transy career scoring ranks. He now has 1,026 points, which puts him at No. 39 on the all-time list. Next up is John Botkin, who scored1,046. Meyer now has 961 career points after finishing with nine to go with seven rebounds. Nick Fudge had four assists and seven rebounds.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they open Heartland Conference play at Anderson with a 4 p.m. contest.
