Hot-shooting Tigers Top Franklin and Win Rokicki Title

DePauw (3-1) shot 58 percent from the floor and limited Franklin (1-2) to just 38 percent and captured the 2012 Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge title with a 72-55 win over the Grizzlies.

The teams swapped the lead seven times in the first half with five ties and Franklin held its last advantage at 20-19 after Mark Kwiatkowski hit a three with 6:30 left. DePauw quickly turned that around as Alex Payne scored on a layup before Michael Wilkison hit a couple of buckets sandwiching a Barry Flynn jumper to put the Tigers ahead for good at 27-20.

That lead reached as many as 11 before DePauw went to the break with a 37-26 lead on 61.5 percent shooting from the field.

DePauw built the margin to 14 at 48-34 after Adam Botts knocked in a three with 13:32 remaining. Franklin scored the next seven before the Tigers put the Grizzlies away with a 17-2 stretch over a six-minute span to extend the margin to 65-43 with 5:27 left.

Wilkison led DePauw with 18 points and three assists, while Connor Rich and Flynn each scored 12. Rich snagged six rebounds as the Tigers held a 32-25 edge on the boards.

Bailey Howard paced Franklin with 18 points and four assists with J.T. Barton chipping in 10 points. Terry Sargent led the Grizzlies with five rebounds.

Flynn was named the tourney MVP, while Wilkison and Howard earned spots on the team as well.

In the third-place game, Albion never trailed on the way to a 91-80 victory over Purdue-North Central. Jordan Herron paced the Britons with 20 points and seven boards, while Alphonse Futch led the Panthers with 17 points. Herron and Futch also were named to the all-tournament team.

DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, November 28, when they travel to Earlham for a 6 p.m. contest.
