Owings Mills, Md. – Senior guard Devin Spencer (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for the inaugural Hoopsville National Invitational Classic Sunday evening as Spencer helped the No. 19 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team to a 59-49 victory over the 24th-ranked Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets.
Spencer poured in a game-high 18 points, with 14 coming in the second half, as he knocked down four triples while adding three rebounds and three steals. Tonight's 10-point win helped the Seahawks rebound from yesterday's season-opening loss.
St. Mary's (1-1) turned around a two-point halftime deficit with 52.6% shooting from the field and a 10-of-12 effort at the free throw line. The Seahawks also notched 13 points off of eight second-half R-MC turnovers. Spencer started off the half with the first of his three second-half triples to return the lead to St. Mary's and the team held on to that lead for all of the half except for 30 seconds when sophomore forward Chris Hamilton's (Dayton, Ohio) long-range shot gave the Yellow Jackets a 41-40 lead at 8:57.
Five straight points by Spencer sparked a 13-2 run that put the Seahawks up 53-43 with 2:58 remaining in the game. After a sophomore forward Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va.) triple pulled R-MC within four at 2:05, St. Mary's closed out the game on a 6-0 spurt with a perfect showing at the free throw line for its first win of the 201-13 season.
Sophomore guard Nick LaGuerre (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) contributed 11 points, three rebounds and two steals while junior guard Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) added 10 points and four boards. Sophomore center MacGyver Biniak (Elkridge, Md./Howard) once again led the Seahawks' effort on the glass with a game-high seven caroms.
Randolph-Macon (0-3) headed into halftime with a 27-25 advantage after erasing a five-point deficit in the final three minutes of the first half with a 10-3 run. Despite having four starters scoreless in the first 20 minutes, the Yellow Jackets were able to hang with St. Mary's with 21 points from their bench. Junior forward Andre Simon (Newport News, Va.) and sophomore forward Akeem Holmes (King William, Va.) led the bench's 21-point effort with seven and six points, respectively.
Senior forward Jeff Haus (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) paced the Seahawks at intermission with six points and four boards while Biniak grabbed six rebounds. Haus finished the game with seven points and five caroms.
The Seahawks will look to continue their winning next weekend at the Carnegie Mellon University Double Tree Tournament in Pittsburgh. St. Mary's will face Capital University (1-1) of Ohio on Saturday, November 24 at 1:00 pm.
