(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Four Saints reach double-figures as the Thomas More College men's basketball team defeated Earlham College, 98-62, tonight (Thursday, November 15, 2012) in its season opener at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 1-0 and with the loss, the Quakers fall to 0-1.
Thomas More opened the game on a 6-0 run capped by a three-pointer by sophomore shooting guard Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Seneca) with 19:18 to play in the first half. Earlham went on a 24-14 run capped by a Kirk Douglas lay-up to take a 24-20 lead with 8:46 to play in the half. The Saints closed out the first half on a 33-5 run to take a 53-29 lead into halftime when Richard made jumper with 1:21 to play in the first half.
The Saints opened the second half on a 27-10 run to extend the lead to 80-39 with 13:40 to play in the game when junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) converted an old fashion three-point play. The Quakers used a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 80-51 with 8:22 to play in the game when Robert Beeler made a lay-up. That would be as close as Earlham would come as Thomas More closed out the game on an 18-11 run for the 98-62 victory.
The Saints were led in scoring by Richard, who finished the game with 17 points. Joining him in double-figure scoring was junior point guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) with 15, junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) with 12 and sophomore shooting guard Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) with 10. Richard led Thomas More on the boards with five rebounds, while Berlekamp and senior shooting guard Ethan King (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) each added four boards. Berlekamp led the team in assists with five, while Housley led the team in steals with five.
Thomas More returns to action on Saturday (November 17) when it plays DePauw University on the first day of the College of Mount St. Joseph Tip-Off Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
