WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team lost a close game Sunday afternoon to Valley Forge Christian College, 78-71, in the consolation game of their annual GU Holiday Tournament.
The Bison (2-4) took their largest lead of the game, 20-11, at the 12:20 mark in the first half on a Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) lay-up. However, the Patriots pulled it together and the score went back and forth throughout the remainder of the half. GU took a slim 40-39 lead into the locker room. Senior forward Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) was a big part of the first half action, keeping the Bison afloat with nine points, five rebounds and four assists in the period.
The Patriots (6-2) went on a 12-2 run to start the second half and take control of the game. Just as the Patriots did in the first half, the Bison went on a run of their own to close the gap. GU trailed by just three, 74-71, with 19 seconds left in the game. A couple of close calls and unfortunate bounces didn't go Gallaudet's way in the waning seconds as Valley Forge hung on to win.
Seeber led the Bison with 16 points, five assists, and three steals, but shot only 6 of 20 from the field. Senior guard Brandon McMillan (Frederick, Md.) had 13 points and six rebounds. Tatum finished with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio) led the team with eight rebounds to go with his seven points.
