NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team ended its 2011-12 season following a 63-57 loss to Waynesburg College in the opening round of the 2012 Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament.
Westminster led 9-6 early in the first half (16:16), however the Yellow Jackets went on a 15-3 run to take a 23-12 lead. The Titans responded with a 12-0 run to finish the half to go up 24-23 at intermission. Freshman Ben Donlow (Poland, OH / Poland Seminary) led the scoring-surge scoring 10 of the 12 points, including two three pointers (one coming as time expired).
Sophomore Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA / Union) came out of locker room scoring five straight points to give Westminster a 29-23 lead. Waynesburg then orchestrated another run (10-3) that put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 33-32, with 14:50 left in the game. The Titans battled, but Waynesburg never lost the lead for the rest of the contest.
Thomas tied his game- and career-high with 27 points (10-for-17), which included a team-high four three-pointers. Donlow chipped in with 18 points (6-for-21), while junior Adam Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) added six points with a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Ron Martino (Youngstown, OH / Cardinal Mooney) dished out a team-high three assists. Juniors Doug Smith (South Park, PA / South Park) and Reuben King (Tarentum, PA / Highlands) registered two steals each.
Ben Altmeyer led Waynesburg with 12 points, while four other Yellow Jackets recorded nine points each.
For the game, Waynesburg shot 47.1% (24-for-51) and Westminster was 36.2% (21-for-58).
The Titans end the season with a 6-20 overall record and finished in eighth place in the PAC with a 4-12 record.
