Loras spoils Storm's home finale

INDIANOLA, Iowa – It was a bitter end to the regular season as the Simpson men's basketball team surrendered an 11-point, second-half lead in an 81-76 loss to Loras on Saturday at Cowles Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the Storm (11-13, 8-8 Iowa Conference) are locked in to the No. 6 seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament and will travel to face third-seeded Dubuque on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Start time is to be determined.

Brian Gaughan led a well-rounded attack by the Duhawks (7-18, 4-12), scoring a team-high 13 points. Tim Kelly added 12, Aaron Schueller 11 and Dan Pawelski and Jordan Harrelson finished with 10 apiece.

Trailing the entire second half and by as many as 11 early in the period, Loras out-scored Simpson 17-4 in the final five minutes, erasing an eight-point deficit. A layup by Taylor Baxter made the score 72-66, sparking 10 unanswered by the Duhawks. After Elijah Knox gave Simpson a short-lived 76-74 lead, a layup by Pawelski tied it up before Loras made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch.

Zack Barragan scored a game-high 21 points in his final game at Cowles Fieldhouse. Chad Boston and Cornelius Mosby added 12 apiece and Drew Bentley finished with 10 and eight rebounds.

Trailing by three with 15 seconds left, Barragan had a chance to tie the game but missed from the right wing.

Notes: Before the game, Simpson honored four seniors who took the floor at Cowles Fieldhouse for the final time: Zack Barragan, Chad Boston, Stefon Brown and Cornelius Mosby.
