STEVENS POINT (February 15, 2012) - Hank Kujak (Fr, Blair) hit a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime to give UW-Stout a 67-64 win over 12th ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at Quandt Fieldhouse.
It would turn out to be a night of 3-pointers near the buzzer for the Blue Devils (8-16, 3-12 WIAC). Trailing by nine points, 57-48 with 3:49 left in regulation, Stout began their comeback.
Alex Oman (So, Lake Elmo, Minn) hit a 3-pointer to put Stout to within six, 57-51 at 3:32. Jarvis Ragland (So, Milwaukee) cut the lead to four with a bucket at 3:06, then nearly a minute later, Ragland hit a free throw to cut the lead to 57-54. Oman hit the second of two free throw attemptsat 1:26 to cut the Pointer (19-5, 12-3 WIAC) lead to two, 57-55.
The Pointers' Dan Tillema stretched the lead back up to four with a pair of free throws at 1:12, but Ragland made it 59-57 on a pass from Erik Olson (Jr, Buffalo, Minn). With four seconds remaining, the Pointers' Tyler Tillema made the front end of a pair of free throws and the ball went out of bounds in favor of the Blue Devils. Oman drilled a 3-pointer with one tick left on the clock to send the game into overtime, 60-60.
The Pointers got a pair of free throw early in the overtime period to take a 62-60 lead, but Oman put Stout ahead, 63-62, with a 3-point shot. The lead swung back to the Pointers, 64-63, on a bucket by Tyler TIllema at 3:09.
That would be the end of the scoring until 1:55 when Kujak was fouled and made the front end of the pair of charity attempts to tie the game at 64. Then came a series of missed shots both teams. The Pointers came up empty at 1:30 and Stout missed a pair of layups and a pair of free throws. The Pointers missed a shot with 34 seconds left and Kujak pulled down the rebounds.
The Blue Devils worked the ball around and got the ball into the hands of Oman, their leading scorer. But with four seconds remaining, Dan Tillema blocked Oman's layup, with the rebound falling into Kujak's hands, who stepped back and hit the game winning 3-pointer, his only 3-point attempt of the night.
The game was close throughout. The Pointers held as much as a five point lead in the first half and built up to the nine point lead late in the game before Stout's comeback.
Kujak finished the game with a collegiate-high nine points and a collegiate-high five rebounds. The game-winning 3-pointer was Kujak's only 3-point attempt of the evening. Oman led all scorers with 20 points and added eight rebounds. Ragland finished up the night with 11 points.
The win also marked Stout coach Eddie Andrist's 400th career win. Andrist is now 400-345 overall.
The Pointers got 18 points from Dan Tillema, 15 from Tyler Tillema, 13 from Jordan Brezinski and 12 from Jordan Giordana.
The loss dropped the Pointers into a three-way tie for first place with UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls.
The Blue Devils will conclude the season by traveling to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 18, while the Pointers will be at UW-Eau Claire.
