Cortland Clinches SUNYAC Tourney Home Game With 85-67 Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior guards Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) and Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) led five Cortland double-figure scorers with 19 points each as Cortland clinched a top-three SUNYAC regular-season finish with an 85-67 win over visiting Brockport.

Cortland, 17-6 overall, has a 12-4 SUNYAC record with two regular-season games remaining. Oswego has clinched the top spot in the league (currently 16-0). Cortland is second, followed by Buffalo State at 11-5. Brockport and Geneseo are tied for fourth with 9-7 records, and no team below Buffalo State can catch Cortland. The Red Dragons will host a SUNYAC tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Feb. 21, with the opponent and time to be determined.

Hefele fell three assists shy of a triple-double. He finished the night with 19 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. His point total matches his career high and his rebounds, assists and steals are all new career bests. Hefele hit 6-of-11 shots from the floor, 3-of-6 from three-point range, and 4-of-5 free throws.

Winter finished with six rebounds and four assists along with his 19 points. Junior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) scored 17 points, sophomore Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) tallied 14 points and junior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) added 12 points.

Kyheem Green (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) and John Ivy (Rochester/East) led Brockport (11-12, 9-7 SUNYAC) with 15 points each. Donnell Jackson (Rochester/Edison) scored 12 points. Green and Stephen Sisson (Ballston Spa/Saratoga Springs) each grabbed six rebounds.

Cortland, which never trailed, led 38-25 with 3:57 left in the first half. Brockport, however, closed to within five on two occasions before the break and was behind 42-35 at halftime. The Golden Eagles got as close as 45-43 on two Jackson free throws with 16:18 left in the game and was still within four at 60-56 after Ivy hit a three-pointer with 10:11 remaining.

Manning scored the game's next six points to give Cortland a 10-point lead, but baskets by Ivy and Jackson closed the margin to six. with 7:38 left. The Red Dragons, however, put the game away with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes. Winter and McMahon each scored four points and Hefele hit a three-pointer during the stretch as Cortland took a 77-62 lead.

Cortland shot 44 percent from the field and 86 percent from the foul line (25-of-29). Brockport shot 36 percent from the floor and also hit 86 percent of its free throws (19-of-22).
