SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshmen guards Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, RI) and Joseph Henry (Medway, MA) each scored 13 points as Roger Williams edged Western New England 60-58 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball game Tuesday evening (Feb. 14) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

The Hawks, who dropped a 69-68 decision to the Golden Bears on a last-second shot January 19 in Newport, Rhode Island, improved to 13-11 overall and 9-8 in the conference after breaking a four-game slide.

Western New England (8-16, 5-12 CCC) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final three minutes and had a chance to win the game, but a three-point attempt by senior guard Andre Shaw (New York, NY) hit the front of the rim and fell out as the clock expired. Shaw led the Golden Bears with 15 points (6-for-10 from the field) while junior forward Dennis Rinaldi (Harrison, NY) had 14 points and sophomore guard Ryan Mickiewicz (East Longmeadow, MA) 10.

Roger Williams led 31-23 at halftime and extended its cushion to 13 (42-29) when freshman guard Adam Cook (Manasquan, NJ) sank two free throws with 15:07 to play. The Hawks still had a double-digit lead at 53-41 after Palumbo made a layup at the 7:11 mark.

Senior center Pat Flanagan (Somerville, MA) scored on a layup to give the visitors a 57-48 advantage with 3:02 to play before Western New England staged a comeback.

The Golden Bears scored seven straight points cutting the margin to 57-55 when Mickiewicz made a layup with 58.5 seconds to play. Flanagan then grabbed an offensive rebound, made the put back and was fouled completing a three-point play with 23.4 second remaining.

Mickiewicz raced back court and connected on a long three-pointer just six second seconds later to trim the lead to 60-58. Palumbo missed the front end of a one-and-one with 14.8 seconds left, but WNE fell just short.

Sophomore forward Daniel Minto (West Hempstead, NY) contributed nine points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three blocks for Western New England.

Flanagan finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Palumbo also had six steals and six rebounds.

Shaw and guards Nick Belcastro (Hull, MA) and Martin Payne (Springfield, MA) were honored before the game during Senior Night activities along with the cheerleaders and dance team.
