Warhawks Upset in Superior

Whitewater started quickly, taking an 11-4 lead with 16:08 left in the first half.  But that proved to be short-lived, as UW-S came back to lead by one, twice, at 21-20 at 9:57 and 23-22 with 9:29 left, the Yellowjackets only leads of the half.  UW-W was back up by five, 32-27 with 2:01 on the clock, and the Warhawks took a 32-31 lead into halftime.

UW-W senior Chris Davis (Madison/East) led both teams with 11 points, hitting 3-4 from beyond the arc, with junior forward Luke Knoble (Boscobel) adding ten on 5-7 from the field.  Sophomore center Bronson Byrne, 7-0 and 290 pounds, led UW-S with eight points on 4-6 from the field.

The Warhawks scored the first two baskets of the second half to lead 39-33.  As they did in the first half, Superior came back, tying the game at 41-41.  Luke Knoble (Boscobel) hit two free throws, the first attempts of the game for UW-W, to put Whitewater ahead 43-41 with 12:01 left. At 5:33 sophomore guard Eric Bryson (Elkhorn) completed a three point play to put UW-W up 55-49, equaling the Warhawks' largest lead of the half.  Bryne followed with a three point play to bring Superior back to 55-54 with 3:25 left to set the tone for the remaining minutes.

With Whitewater leading 57-56 Davis missed a jumper, but the ball went out off a Superior player and UW-W retained possesion with just one second on the shot clock.  UW-W did not get off a shot in time, turning it back to Superior, which called timeout with 0:34 left.  Superior's Ben Aalfs missed a shot at 0:19, and Davis grabbed the rebound and was fouled.  He made the first of two free throws, putting UW-W up 58-56, and Superior rebounded the second and called a timeout with 0:11 left.  Once again the Yellowjackets went to Aalfs, who hit a three as the buzzer was sounding, making it 59-58 Superior.  Officials adjusted the clock to 1.1 seconds left, and Whitewater turned the ball over trying to inbounds length of the court.  UW-S inbounded, the player was fouled, and made a free throw for the final margin.

UW-S committed nine turnovers, Whitewater 14.  The Yellowjackets led in both points off turnovers (12-6) and second chance points (12-4).  Superior also got 14 points from their bench, Whitewater six.  Whitewater went 3-4 at the free throw line, edging the season low established at UW-Oshkosh January 18 (3-5).

Davis ended up with 19 points and eight rebounds, both team highs.  He shared the rebound lead with Knoble, also eight, plus Knoble contributed 16 points on 7-10 shooting from the field.  Bryson was also in double figures with 11.  Aalfs topped UW-S with 18 points and four assists, with Byrne chipping in with 11 points.

The WIAC tournament begins play Wednesday, February 22, with the top two teams receiving a first round bye and the third and fourth place teams hosting a game on the 22nd at 7:00.
