WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team pulled together after a frustrating loss at Aurora University to pull out a 72-59 victory over Maranatha Baptist on Thursday night. Three Eagles scored in double figures as the Edgewood College capitalized on a huge advantage at the free throw line to stay within one game of first place in the Northern Athletics Conference North Division.

Senior Derek Nkemnji scored the first five points of the game to put Edgewood College (17-5, 11-3 NAC) ahead and the Eagles would never trail again. Three free throws from senior Ben Wisniewski and back-to-back buckets from sophomore Justin Williams sparked a 9-0 run which gave the Eagles a 21-11 lead. Edgewood College would take a 30-23 lead in the locker room at halftime.

Maranatha Baptist (4-17, 0-14 NAC) cut the Eagles' lead to one point on a three-point basket by Matthew McGivern early in the second half. However, the Eagles would regain control on an important sequence where Wisniewski made three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt and then pushed the lead back up to 46-36 with a jumper 90 seconds later. Maranatha tried to extend the game by fouling, but the Eagles made 20 of 29 free throw attempts in the second half to maintain their lead and seal the game.

Nkemnji led all scorers with 16 points on a perfect shooting night. The Madison Memorial product made all five of his shots from the field including two three-point baskets, and sunk all four free throw attempts. Cashton Craig finished with 15 points on the strength of an 8-for-9 night at the free throw line. Wisniewski tallied 13 points and went 7-for-8 on free throws. Freshman Joe Klocek scored nine points and added a team-high four assists. Williams added eight points.

Maranatha Baptist received 14 points from McGivern, including a 4-for-5 performance from the three-point line. Caleb Burch was the other Crusader in double figures with 11 points off the bench. The Crusaders outscored the Eagles 50-48 from the floor, but couldn't overcome a 24-9 deficit at the free throw line.

With the victory, Edgewood College remains one game behind Concordia University Wisconsin for the top spot in the NAC North Division. The Eagles can claim a share of the division title and the top seed out of the North Division by winning their last two games. The Eagles host Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday for Senior Day, before travelling to Concordia Wisconsin for the regular season showdown with the Falcons on Tuesday.
