Gulls Edge Rival Gordon with Greene’s Late Basket

More news about: Endicott

WENHAM, MA – Endicott guard Lance Greene (Dorchester, Mass.) converted a three-point play with just three seconds to play, propelling the Gulls to a 70-67 win over the Fighting Scots of Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action.

Endicott now holds a 14-8 record and improves to 9-6 in a tightly packed CCC. Gordon falls to 8-14, and 7-8 in conference play.

The Gulls netted the first points of the game on the opening possession, but were never able to establish more than a five-point lead throughout the first half. Gordon took the lead at 17-16 through a jumper by Luke Hamilton (Mount Airy, N.C.) with under 8:30 minutes to play, but sophomore Bennet Knowlton (Shrewsbury, Mass.) answered for the Gulls. Back and forth basketball left Endicott up on the hosts at the break, 31-26.

Opening the half with an offensive flurry, the Scots closed the gap and eventually overtook the lead, 36-35, after five minutes of play. That lead was short-lived, however, as Endicott stormed back to regain the advantage and push it to as many as 10 with seven minutes remaining via a 16-6 run that included four points from sophomore Tyler Burkhart (Cromwell, Conn.).

Determined not to go down quietly, the Scots went on a 10-0 run in the final three minutes behind six points from Park Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and four from David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) to draw the game even with 27 seconds left before Greene delivered the winning drive for Endicott. A half-court three-point attempt from Thomas hit the backboard for Gordon as the final buzzer sounded.

Green finished out the night with 19 points and two steals, while freshman Andre Makris (Southbury, Conn.) netted 14 and grabbed eight boards and Burkhart contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Dempsey led Gordon with a 25-point, 12-rebound double-double, Thomas with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, Hamilton with 11 points, and Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) with 13 rebounds.

Endicott will travel to face CCC foe Curry College on Saturday, February 11 at 3:00 pm. The Scots will be in Newport to play Salve Regina at the same time.
