Strong Second Half Helps Brooklyn Coast Past York, 80-58

Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team shot 69.6% (16-23) from the field in the second half, as the Bulldogs downed the Cardinals of York College tonight by a score of 80-58 in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup.

With the win, BC improves to 16-7 overall on the year and 7-3 in the CUNYAC; while the Cardinals fall to 7-17 overall on the season and 3-7 in league play.

The Bulldogs took control of the contest from the opening tip using a 10-0 run to start the ballgame. Junior forward Kavon Baker helped spark the run scoring seven of the 10 points. A layup from York's Michael Trowers at the 15:58 mark ended the Cardinals scoring drought.

A free throw from senior guard Tyshawn Russell gave Brooklyn its largest lead of the half, 39-25, with 2:23 left in the period. York would not go down lightly, however, as the Cardinals scored the final seven points in the half to go into the locker room down 39-32.

The Bulldogs would continue to build on their advantage in the second half, as York would be unable to recover from its first half deficit. Following a jumper from the Cardinals' William Holley made it 44-36 in favor of BC at the 17:06 mark; Brooklyn used a 13-4 run to take a 17-point advantage, 57-40, with 12:20 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs would lead by double figures the rest of the way en route to their 80-58 victory.

Russell led all scorers for Brooklyn dropping a game-high 25 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the field. Baker added 18 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Amil John contributed with 17 points and six assists.

York's Shamir Wilkinson netted 15 points, while Holley just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.Trowers finished with 13 points coming off the bench.

For the game, BC shot 57.4% (31-54) from the field and just 25.0% (3-12) from the three. The Bulldogs took advantage of the charity stripe converting 75.0% (15-20) from the free throw line.

York shot 44.4% (25-54) from the field and 26.7% (4-15) from beyond the arc. The Cardinals also shot 54.5% (6-11) from the line. York won the battle of the glass, out-rebounding Brooklyn 37-21.

Turnovers were the key to the Brooklyn win, as the Cardinals were forced into 31 turnovers, which led to 39 points for BC.

Brooklyn returns to action this Friday, February 10th, as the Bulldogs will play host to the College of Staten Island in the CUNYAC finale for both teams. BC will look to pull off the upset over CSI, as the Dolphins are undefeated in conference play this season and ranked first in the Atlantic Region. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the West Quad Center.
