Game-Winning Basket By Nangle Boosts Lehman Over Hunter, 61-60

More news about: Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. - As a senior, Dwight Nangle's days as a member of the Lightning are quickly dwindling.

On Sunday afternoon at Mount Saint Michael Academy, he produced a day to remember as he scored a season and game-high 20 points and put in the game-winning layup with under five seconds remaining to help the Lightning capture a crucial conference game from the Hunter Hawks, 61-60.

Following Nangle's bucket, Lehman still had to endure a good look at the basket by the Hawks, who were forced to travel the length of the court before getting off a layup attempt that was ultimately off the mark.

That Nangle even got an attempt to win the game proved to be an act of good fortune. Trailing 60-59 after Quaseem Weems split a pair of free throws, the Lightning was the benefactor of a miscommunication in the backcourt by the Hawks that led to the ball being thrown out of bounds and given back to Lehman.

The drama in the final seconds capped an exciting second half that saw only one lead of seven points or more, which came with 13:53 remaining on a basket by Hunter's Eric Kippins that put the Hawks up 37-30. Hunter would hold onto its lead until there were 52 seconds left when Weems scored to give Lehman a 58-57 advantage. A three point play by Mark Wnukowski regained the lead for Hunter with 26 seconds on the clock in advance of the final sequence of events.

Both teams were forced to play shorthanded on Sunday afternoon due to an incident earlier in the season that stripped key players from each side. Despite that, the Lightning looked to be no worse for the wear as the team built an 18-4 lead to start the game behind 11 early points from Kelvin Gil.

In addition to Nangle's outstanding effort, Lehman received a double-double from George Nimmons (10 points, 10 rebounds), and six points and 10 rebounds from Weems.

The Lightning will take a six days off before getting back on the court when the team closes out its regular season conference schedule with a game against John Jay College at the Monroe Athletic Complex located at New Roc City.
