New London, CT --- Senior Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) had a game-high 25 points while freshman Sam Longwell (Acton, MA) had 15 of his career-high 18 points in the first half leading WPI to a 82-76 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
WPI shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the second half (15-24) and finished 32-56 from the field (57.1 percent) while making seven of 17 from three-point range.
Carr was 12 of 15 from the floor while Longwell did most of his damage from behind the arc, hitting five of ten from three-point range while leading the team with four assists.
Sophomore Ryan Kolb (Southington, CT) added 11 points and along with Carr led the team with eight rebounds each while freshman Marco Coppola (Watertown, MA) and added ten points in the win.
WPI improves to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play while the Bears drop to 7-12 overall and 1-8 in the NEWMAC.
The Engineers jumped out to a 22-8 lead with 14:17 left in the opening half and maintaining a double-figure lead for the rest of the half and led 43-33 at the break. Longwell was four of seven from three-point range and had 15 points at halftime.
WPI pushed the to 73-58 with 7:25 left before the Bears responded with nine straight capped by three-pointer by sophomore Devonte Weems to make the score 73-67 with 5:05 remaining, but the Engineers held on to beat the Bears for the 12th straight time in the regular season.
Sophomore Kevin Sowers (Monrovia, MD) and senior Trip Fernandes (Branford, CT) led the Bears with 14 points each while Sowers tied a season-high with six assists. Junior Greg Marshall (Gaithersburg, MD) and freshman David Anderson (Goose Creek, SC) each finished with 11 points while junior Jimmy Knudsen (Ridge, NY) (eight points) and sophomore John Benedict (Cumming, GA) led the way with five rebounds each. Freshman Jesse Hughes(Jacksonville, FL) had the best game of his young career posting career-highs with seven points, four rebounds and five assists.
Coast Guard was 26-60 from the floor (43.3 percent) and made seven of 17 from behind the arc.
WPI, who closes out the regular season with three straight home contests, plays its final road game of the regular season on Wednesday at Wheaton at 7:30pm.
