NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 28, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball won its fourth straight game after defeating Johnson State 77-66, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers improve to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in the NAC. Johnson falls to 4-14 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Colby-Sawyer freshman Koang Thok (Portland, Maine) led all players with 22 points. He added nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) recorded 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) was the third Charger to reach double-figures with 14 points. Sophomore Cody Addison (Washington, D.C.) grabbed a career and game best 11 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Scott Moran (Orange, Conn.) led the Badgers with 21 points on 8-14 shooting. Sophomore forward Bryan Hickey (Barre, Vt.) tallied 20 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Billy Boyd (Walden, Vt.) chipped in eight points and seven rebounds.
Johnson jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the first four minutes. The teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes before Colby-Sawyer rattled off 9-2 run to lead 25-17. The Chargers kept the lead for the rest of the frame and led by as many as nine. Johnson controlled the glass by outrebounding Colby-Sawyer 22-12. However, the home team held an 18-12 advantage of points in the paint. The Chargers led 36-29 at the break.
The second half was evenly played as both teams made the other commit fouls by driving to the basket. The difference was that Colby-Sawyer knocked down 78% of their free throw attempts in the second, while Johnson connected on just 52.6%. Nevertheless, the Badgers were within one score on several occasions, but could not climb back from the half time deficit.
The Chargers were 23-30 from the free throw line, while Johnson connected on 15-27.
Colby-Sawyer travels to New England College on Tuesday for a 7:30 pm tip. Johnson plays at Lyndon on Tuesday also at 7:30 pm.
