Cyclones Fall To No. 8 Cavaliers 92-71

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (January 28, 2012) – The Centenary College men's basketball team could not find their shot today as they fell to the number eighth ranked Cabrini College Cavaliers 92-71. Today, both teams teamed up to support the nationwide "Coaches vs. Cancer" initiative as each team's coaching staff wore sneakers with their suits to raise awareness to the cause.

The Cavaliers jumped out ahead early on as they went on a 21-6 run to open up the game against the Cyclones. Centenary was able to respond right back as freshman Zhimir Butler (Paterson, N.J./Manchester) was able to knock home a huge bucket from downtown to bring the game to 21-9 with just under ten minutes to go.

Despite a free throw by the Cavaliers, sophomore Gabe Cheavers (Howell, N.J./Howell) was able to knock home a quick layup from Butler before sophomore Andy Charles (West Orange, N.J./Montclair) was able to put back a shot from way downtown to bring the score to 22-14.

Following a quick Cavalier layup, Cheavers responded right back with a huge dunk off a great pass under the basket from Charles to light up the crowd and bring the Cyclones to within eight.

Unfortunately for the Cyclones, the Cavaliers responded right back and took a 44-30 lead entering the locker rooms at halftime. The Cyclones struggled shooting in the first half, shooting only 11-38 from the field. Cabrini was able to capitalize on Cyclone turnovers in the first half as well, scoring 10 points on the eight Centenary turnovers.

The second half didn't look much better for the Cyclones as Cabrini jumped out with six unanswered points to open the half, putting them up 50-30.

The Cavalier offense continued to dominate, pushing them even so far as an 88-59 lead with just under 2:30 left in the game, their largest lead of the night.

The Cyclones just could not find a comfortable spot on the court throughout the game, shooting only 23-77 from the floor and 4-29 from downtown, a number that typically boosts the Cyclone offense.

Cheavers finished the game with a team-high 17 points in his 19 minutes on the court as he shot 7-10 from the field as well as contributing with six rebounds for the Cyclones, all of which came on the defensive end of the court.

With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 10-10 overall with a 6-7 conference mark. Centenary looks to bounce back into action on Wednesday when they host Gwynedd-Mercy at 8:00pm.
